Baja California - Wake, surf, eat, repeat…Surfing sunrise to sunset

Simple as life gets

This past December I was fortunate enough to join my friends on a surf trip exploring Baja California...while planning the trip I was more excited imagining all the photo opportunities...but the surf was firing...so I spent most golden hours of sunrise and sunset surfing the glassy right hand point breaks we camped at instead of taking photos.

One of my favorite things about this trip was how disconnected from technology we all were...We synced with the sun, recharging through coffee and conversations...afternoon naps and the simplicity of sitting, tuning into our desert surroundings. Sunset surf sessions followed by communal meals, sharing stories, staring at the stars, soaking in stillness of the night sky...Waking up to waves, instead of WiFi, linking sections of wrapping energy, our faces bursting with smiles of joy. Lost in the present moment...the now, the beauty of place, friends, and surf, feeling so grateful to be alive.

I love shooting 35mm film in my medium format twin lens…I like the look of the exposed sprockets. This was the first time shooting Fuji 400h and love the variety of scenes I captured as our trip unfolded.

Baja is a place of my dreams…It's what I imagine Southern California looked like a 100 years ago…Raw, rural, and absolutely beautiful. I hope it stays that way for a long long time. Here are some moments from our trip captured on Fuji Color c200, portra 400, and portra 800…I don’t stick to one film stock. I like to imagine what kind of light and colors I will encounter and choose my film stock based on those factors.

As I mentioned, this was my first time shooting Super 8…I made a poetic edit from my trip down to Baja California this past December. This was the first time shooting Super 8...I am hooked....I used to film and make snowboard edits (check em out my YouTube account which is “godaydream”) so this is re-igniting that passion. I love the sound of the film running through the camera, the limitedness of film - 3 minutes of footage per roll, and the look and feel of the video.

Below are some of the haikus I wrote that inspired the dialogue:

In awe and wonder

I am lucky to be here

Camp, friends, surf, Baja

Wake, surf, eat, repeat

Surfing sunrise to sunset

Simple as life gets

Desert rhythms

Flow with light, tides, moon

Beauty surrounds

Perspective shifting

Cosmic coincidences

Grateful connection

Miles and miles

Journey reveals constant change

Humans living life
